A perfect storm in Brussels - new packaging directives will challenge the industry

Felix Helander will present a quick overview of the main EU directives that are packaging related. Never before have so many initiatives been started that are packaging related. New initiatives are started such as the European Green Deal, the Circular Economy Action Plan, the Single Use Plastics Directive and the Farm to Fork Strategy. Old directives are being updated, for example, the Packaging and Packaging Waste Directive with the Essential Requirements and the Waste Framework Directive. Together this will have an impact on the packaging industry and all other industries that are using packaging in any form or shape.

Felix Helander

Felix Helander has a background in the packaging and food industries. Always in marketing and/or strategy roles.

Material scarcity – a new reality?

Is material scarcity a potential reality following the ‘The Green Deal’?Are we heading towards a situation where there is a risk of scarcity of material of the right quality, volume and price for the intended applications?

Regulatory effects of ‘The Green Deal’ are influencing packaging materials, recycling rates and requirements for design and functionality are pushing towards the use of renewable fibre-based materials. In parallel regulatory changes regarding forestry, forest management and harvesting risk limit the availability of fibre-based material. The quest for non-fossil energy is increasing the demand for biobased energy generation.Other material industries, notably the textile industry, are moving towards using renewable fibre-based materials for the circular economy, including the recycling of textiles.Initiatives (e.g. 4Evergreen and EPPA) on upgraded recycling collection systems, engineering and design for circularity as well as recyclability recommendations are aimed at managing the development.

Is this a route to reaching sustainable carbon cycles?
